1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how Presidential 1776 Award Assessment Platform (referred to as "Presidential 1776 Award," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, shares, and protects information about individuals who use our websites, applications, and related services (collectively, the "Services").
The Presidential 1776 Award is a civics competition that includes an online exam for eligible U.S. high-school students. This Privacy Policy describes how personal information is handled when you complete the online test.
The Services are operated by EBSCOed and are accessed using LER.me user accounts. Your LER.me account is governed by its own privacy policy that can be found here; this Privacy Policy describes additional practices that apply when you use that account to participate in the Presidential 1776 Award online test.
This Privacy Policy is intended for, and the Services are designed for, use in the United States of America. By using our Services, you acknowledge that you have read this Privacy Policy and understand how we handle your information.
2. Scope and Applicability
This Privacy Policy applies to your use of the Presidential 1776 Award competition website. It applies to students and other participants who register for or take the online test through this platform.
The competition itself is generally open to eligible U.S. students in grades 9–12 residing in the 50 states and the District of Columbia, subject to the official rules. Use of the online Services also requires that you meet the age requirements described in Section 11 (Children's and Minors' Privacy).
Our Services are intended for use in the United States only. If you choose to use the Services from outside the United States, you understand that your information will be processed in the United States and that U.S. laws may differ from those in your jurisdiction.
Eligibility:
- The online Services are intended solely for student participants who meet the competition's grade and other eligibility criteria set out in the official rules (generally U.S. high-school students in grades 9–12) and other interested parties including parents and educators.
- Only students who are at least 14 years of age at the time they register may use a LER.me account to access the Services, subject to Section 11 (Children's and Minors' Privacy).
- Students 13 years of age and under are not permitted to use the Services under any circumstances.
Everything beyond using the online platform to access and complete the test (including scoring, determining winners, and any travel or in-person activities) is handled outside this platform and outside the scope of this Privacy Policy.

4. Information We Collect
This site does not host or store your underlying account credentials (such as your sign-in email address or password). Those are managed by your LER.me account, which you use to sign in. This site only hosts the competition experience, and the information needed to deliver the exam.
We collect information in connection with your use of the Services and your completion of the online test. This includes:
4.1 Test Participation Data
When you take the online test, we collect information such as:
- Your eligibility criteria including school name and address, city, state, and zip code.
- A parent or legal guardian’s email address and phone number for participants under 18 years of age.
- Your responses to test questions.
- Technical and timing data needed to deliver, secure, and administer the test (for example, timestamps and event logs related to your activity during the session)
4.2 Automatically Collected Information
When you use the Services, we automatically collect certain technical and usage information, such as device and browser information, log and usage data (for example, access times, pages or features viewed, and navigation patterns). We do not collect or store precise geolocation information (such as GPS coordinates) for any user. We may infer only a broad location (for example, state or region) from your IP address for limited purposes such as security, fraud prevention, and confirming that the Services are being used in the United States.
5. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for purposes limited to operating the online test platform, including:
- Providing and maintaining the Services, including enabling you to access and complete the online test.
- Operating and supporting the technical delivery of the online test, including basic registration checks and ensuring the test is functioning properly.
- Improving and maintaining the performance and security of the Services, including understanding how features are used and resolving technical issues.
- Security, fraud prevention, legal compliance, and enforcing our Terms of Service and applicable test rules (for example, preventing misuse of the platform or unauthorized access).
6. Information We Do Not Intend to Collect
The Services are not intended to collect or disclose medical or health information, or other highly sensitive third-party information, unless explicitly permitted by law and supported by separate consent and legal agreements. Please do not submit such information through this platform.
We also do not use this platform to collect detailed travel, lodging, or in-person event information. If the competition later includes in-person components such as semifinals or finals, and we provide related services like a judges’ scorecard or a separate registration system, those services will be offered outside this platform and may have their own terms and privacy notice. Any detailed travel, lodging, or on-site event information, if needed, will be collected and managed outside this platform.
7. How We Share Information
We share information only as described below and only to support operation of the online test:
7.1 With Service and Technology Providers
We may share information with trusted service and technology providers that help us operate the Services, such as:
- Hosting and infrastructure providers that run the website and application
- Authentication and account management services tied to your LER.me account.
- Semi-finalist and finalist eligibility criteria, contact information, and scores may be shared with the U.S. Department of Education.
7.2 Legal and Safety Reasons
We may disclose information if we believe in good faith that such disclosure is required by law, legal process, or governmental request, or is necessary to protect the rights, safety, and security of Presidential 1776 Award, our users, or the public.
8. No User-to-User Messaging
The Services do not provide direct user-to-user messaging or chat. Participants cannot message each other within the platform.
9. No Advertising
The Services do not display third-party advertisements, and we do not use your personal information to deliver interest-based or targeted advertising on this platform.
10. Data Retention and Account Deletion
We retain information for as long as necessary to operate the Services, support your ability to complete the online test, comply with legal obligations, and enforce our agreements.
If you no longer wish to use the Services, you may request full deletion of your account and associated data by submitting an opt-out request form that will be made available through the competition site. Once your request is received, we will permanently delete your account and associated personal information from our active systems for this platform and the underlying LER.me account linked to it.
Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. After deletion is complete, you will lose access to this competition site, your LER.me account, and any data, records, or services that depend on that account, and your data will not be retrievable. We may contact you to confirm your request.
11. Children's and Minors' Privacy
11.1 Users 13 and Under
Presidential 1776 Award online Services are not directed to children 13 years of age and under. Students 13 and under are not permitted to use the Services under any circumstances.
If we learn that someone 13 or under has used the Services or provided personal information through this site, we will delete the information collected through this site and take steps to prevent that user from continuing to use the Services.
11.2 Users Ages 14 to 17
If you are between 14 and 17 years old, you may use the Services if you have a valid LER.me account and you read and accept the Terms of Service and this Privacy Policy during registration.
For users in this age group, we do not store or retain IP address–based or precise geolocation information in connection with their use of this site, except as strictly necessary for limited security or delivery purposes (such as routing traffic or preventing abuse). We also do not use IP-based geolocation to personalize, profile, or build behavioral analytics tied to their use of this site.
12. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect information. No system can be guaranteed to be 100% secure, and you are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials.
13. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
Your continued use of the Services after changes become effective signifies your acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.
